HH: What led you ladies to start House 38? What is it like being a sister duo?
House 38: For us starting House 38 was about two things; we wanted to work together and we both constantly desired something we could not find. S is notoriously difficult to shop for because she is so picky. Working together is kind of fun because we never seem to be “working”. Every conversation is a passionate discussion on something we both hold dear. Also, we early on learned to prioritize our relationship as sisters, over our relationship as business partners.
HH: Do you use any signature techniques or fabrics?
House 38: Our signature technique is string beading. It is a technique that is time and skill intensive. It takes a lot to pick up each little bead individually before attaching it to the fabric. It is more tasking also because we are really finicky about quality so we have to ensure that even though the garment is be done by hand, it has to be neat and each bead has to be attached in a manner that is secure and consistent.

HH: What motivated the launch of PRIM? Who is the line marketed for?
House 38: PRIM came about as a result of conversation with our clients. Many of them wanted to be able to wear our pieces everyday for other occasions that are not special events. So PRIM is an extension of House 38 that focuses on more wearable designs that are also more affordable.

HH: Where does House 38 see itself in the next three years?
House 38: Right now, we are in the process of shifting from a “brick and mortar” retail model to an online retail model. This would allow us to reach more clients over the next three years. We are also focusing on consolidating the brand so we are creating designs that fit into our ethos as a brand that creates clothes for multi-tasking women. The goal is to be able to reach women all over the world, in the next three years.

HH: Thus far, what would you say is the most valuable lesson learned in your journey as designers and a brand?
House 38: The most important lesson we have learned is that regardless of what other essentials you need for a business, passion is by far the most important. Your resolve as a designer would be tested time and time again by disappointments but if you are passionate about your work, you will get up and keep going.
HH: Where are you designs available now, how can readers keep up with House 38, and any other details you would like to include?
House 38: The brand is currently stocked by Malakh and Sco (www.malakhandsco.com), they ship internationally. We are also working on getting more stockists. To keep up with the latest info on House 38, follow on twitter @House_38, House38.tumblr.com or on facebook.com/House38.
