While attending African Fashion Week NY (AFWNY) I had the pleasure of meeting and befriending Suzy Ahunamba, one of the gorgeous models walking in the shows. She is so much more than a pretty face and gracious walk! Her sincerity and spirit for modeling were just as strong as her smile, and while she is still a new face on the block, it won’t be long, before you see her everywhere!
HH: Which shows have you enjoyed walking in the most?
SA: I really have not been in so many shows since I started modeling just last summer, however I really enjoy these cultural shows such as Caribbean Fashion Week 2012 and Africa Fashion Week 2012. The garments are so nice and cultural. They really compliment where the designer comes from.
HH: In your opinion, what makes for an amazing model?
SA: Honestly, I always say this to myself, “you can be the most beautiful person on the outside, but if you are ugly on the inside, it never works.” I believe an amazing model is someone who is confident, but at the same time humble because you hear “you are gorgeous, you have the look, you are perfect” and on the other hand you hear negative feedback, “you’re not what we are looking for, you do not fit the look, you need to change this” etc. However, if you are humble, no matter what anybody says, you are happy with yourself and you know you are beautiful because of YOU.
HH: How did you feel walking in your first show? How do you stay calm when walking?
SA: My first real show was Brooklyn fashion week 2012. I was so nervous because it was my first show and compared to the other girls my walk was not as strong. Each time, before stepping onto the runway I always envisioned in my head my mom and how proud I am making her and myself by doing things in life which I love and make me happy.
HH: You have beautiful natural hair; any favorite hair products?
SA: My favorite hair products are Giovanni deep conditioner and kinky curly detangling conditioner and coconut oil. Surprisingly enough I am not much of a product junky. I found these and stuck to them.
HH: Where are your ‘go to’ fashion resources?
SA: Number one is Forever 21 and H&M. Those stores never seem to fail me.
HH: Are you working on or walking in any events anytime soon?
SA: Yes. On the 25th of August, at the Warwick hotel, I will be walking in SYNC fashion show. It is an event to raise money for sickle cell anemia.
HH: Were any books or role models of significant influence for you?
SA: I really admired the African models out there representing African beauty. The dark skin and the short natural hair really influenced my life because it showed me that the standard blue eyes and blonde hair was not the only beauty out there. I saw how confident they were and how much they stood out and it gave me the confidence also to pursue my dream of modeling. Also, I recently fell in love with the book “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. It definitely helps me keep a positive mind while going through these castings and fashion shows.

HH: What will be the turning point in your career? When in your mind will you know you have made it?
SA: I WILL know in my mind that I have made it when everything and everyone around me screams success. When I walk about my day and I walk into beauty shops or retail stores and see my picture. Or, I walk down the street and people stop me just to say hello because they know who I am. That is definitely when I know I have reached my ultimate success.
