  • Fashion and faces go hand in hand. My personal style is currently pretty “bohemia, hipster”, so I like to keep my face looking natural. This is not to say I don’t wear makeup though, only that there is an art to keeping your features enhanced without looking like you’re about to do an editorial shoot. September marks the change of a new style season and it’s only right to know the makeup trends to match. I wouldn’t steer you wrong loves, so I sought out an amazing MAC MUA to lead the way. Justin Long, a dear friend and amazing master of beauty shares his story and advice.

HH: Tell us a little about yourself and your career in beauty.
    JL:
I’m a 25 year old Philly Native, and have been in the Carolinas for just a bit over half of my life. I am a recent graduate of UNC-Greensboro from the Consumer Apparel & Retail Studies program and am both glad/proud to be finished! An interesting fact that most don’t know about me is that I’m classically trained in Clarinet; I played for over 8 years, including competitive playing on the state and regional levels.

I got into makeup in the late years of high school. I briefly played a bit with makeup during a high school production and that mildly sparked my interests. It wasn’t until about 2005 that I actually began to hands on work with makeup. I worked at Glamour Shots (Insert laughs here,) for a little over year where I was doing hair and makeup. At the time my brother was attending Winston Salem State University and was one of the creative directors of their largest modeling troupe, Mozik. This is where I really got a chance to do some hands on work and really challenge myself in the early stages of my makeup artistry. I would do makeup backstage on whomever I could get my hands on and whoever would let me; one of the scariest but most exciting times of my journey. For four years I free-lanced doing weddings, fashion shows, and whatever else my hands could find to do. In 2010 I was hired by one of the industry’s top cosmetic companies and have continued my freelance work and enjoyed my time with the company.

HH: What products do you suggest to those looking for a natural glam look?
    JL:
Key products to pulling off a naturally glam look are going to be everyday essentials, with a little kick. Key skin Items: good moisturizer, primer, foundation, powder and /or blush.
Eyes: Natural colors that accentuate eye colors, smoldering liners and a GREAT mascara.
Lips: nude/natural lips… or a try a pop of color!

HH: What beauty trends do you love for the fall? How can one incorporate a trend into their everyday routine?
    JL:
My favorite two makeup trends are called “Arti-Tech” and “Hone-Structure.” The arti-tech trend is all about non-conformist and non-traditional color placement, using graphic liners and bold pops of color. Hone Structure is the exact opposite with a skin focus, soft contours a hollow almost haunting look. Inserting trend into everyday makeup is simpler than most believe! You just grasp a small element of which ever trend you love most and inject it into your routine in moderation for the more bold trends and balls to the wall with more natural trends!

HH: Name your favorite makeup products.
JL: There are entirely too many to list!
Here are my top 5 faves:
    MAC Fix + Spray
    MAC Mineralize Skinfinish
    MAC Prolong Wear Concealer

    NARS tinted Moisturizer
    Dior Lipglow

    maccosmetics.com

HH: Your best beauty advice in three sentences.
    JL:
All things (trends/products/color choices) are great in moderation.
“The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural.” – Calvin Klein
Makeup is FUN, NOT rocket science.

HH: What mark do you hope to leave in the beauty world?
    JL:
I have a chance to make a mark on the world each and every day… One of the reasons I love what I do, and am grateful to be able to work in a field that allows me to operate where I am most comfortable. Each and every day I try to change someone’s outlook on the world of beauty and provide them with tools that will allow them to feel more comfortable in their own skin, flaws and all! On a larger scale, I’d love my work to be recognizable.

HH: Which products do you believe are essential for every woman to have in her purse?
    JL:
A compact! 2 lip colors (one neutral/one bold,) black/dark liner, comb/brush, lotion, hair pins and sanitary wipes.
HH: Do you have any favorite beauty blogs or resources?
    JL:
I don’t have any favorite blogs; however YouTube is a GREAT source for all things beauty in the world! Some of my favorites are: Pixiwoos, Gossmakeupartist, Beatfacehoney, and Temptalia
