  • I'm going to keep it real with ya'll, makeup hasn't been my thing well ever. Let's just say the closer I got to the end of college the more I decided to care about makeup. I love a face that is skillfully painted, in a way that enhances, not hinders the beauty queen underneath. This is why I look high and low for those blessed with the gift of highlighting beautiful characteristics in bone structures, eye lids and lips.

Meet Bobbi Brown MUA and founder of Shape Up Your Makeup Aleah Rae. She's transforming faces and women's self esteem all over the DMV area and took some time out of her day to share some knowledge with you. Soak it up, this is part of every woman's boss babe artillery. Her super informative site, could definitely stand to be added to every woman's beauty bookmarked pages.

HH: Tell us a little about yourself and what you do .
AR:Well for starters, I'm a recent transplant to the DMV by way of Charlotte, NC --- and I love love LOVE it here already! While my background is in education (I was a middle school French teacher for six years, go figure eh!) I have been in the beauty/fashion industry for the last three. In the Fall of 2012, I launched my own company --- SHAPE UP YOUR MAKEUP (www.shapeupyourmakeup.com
) --- with the mission of "improving the self-esteem of women everywhere by providing them with real-world makeup application techniques custom fit to their beauty wants and lifestyle needs." Today, between working as an artist and educator for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and helping my SHAPE UP YOUR MAKEUP (or SUYMU) clients look and feel beautiful, I stay BUSY!

HH:Where has makeup taken you so far ? Why would you say you have such a love for it ?
AR:Makeup has taken me farther than I ever imagined. I have always been an artistic person. Pottery to painting. Sewing to silk ribbon embroidery. I've done it all --- and loved every minute of it. But, as a teenager and even a young adult, I would have never thought I would one day be able to make an actual CAREER in an artistic field like makeup. Words cannot express how wonderful it feels to be able to do something I love, release my creative energy, and really transform people --- even if it's just for a few hours --- on a DAILY basis. For me, it's a dream come true.

    HH:Any favorite SS13 beauty trends?
AR:Right now, I'm completely obsessed with the glowing skin that graced the runways of the Spring 2013 fashion shows. In my book, radiant skin should NEVER go out of style --- and I'm so glad to see more everyday women put away that powder --- embracing instead their skin's natural glow.

HH:How can women wear these trends on a daily basis ?
AR:The first step to glowing skin is a good moisturizer. Too often, I find women fail to hydrate their skin, fearing moisturizing it will make it more oily --- when in reality, the exact opposite it true! Once skin is well hydrated, using a bit of under eye concealer, and adding a drop of liquid illuminator to your tinted moisturizer (an oil-free tinted is perfect for all skin types in summer) is the perfect way to capture that J. Lo. glow!

HH:Do you have any favorite DIY beauty treatments ?
AR:Ahhhh, I sure do. (smile) We all know we should exfoliate, but what most beauty magazines don't tell us, is that it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to do so! I like to mix brown sugar with olive oil, and use that mixture to exfoliate my whole body (face too) once a week in the shower. It always leaves my skin well hydrated AND silky smooth.

    HH:What beauty tools are essential?
AR:Never underestimate the importance of good brushes! A set of quality brushes doesn't need to cost you an arm and a leg (spend between $50 and $100 at most). But, having and using the right brushes are an easy way to take your makeup application to the next level.

HH:Favorite brands in your beauty bag ?
AR:My Bobbi Brown's under eye corrector and concealer kit is hands down "the secret of the universe". I'm also a HUGE fan for the brand's cream eye shadows --- super easy to apply and they last all day, with NO creasing or dreaded greasy lid look. I wear my Ellis Faas bronze highlighter along my cheek bones for a sexy glow almost everyday. I own three YSL's lipsticks, which are quite honestly my favorite picks for lips. And right now I have a bit of a fixation on Rimmel London mascara. Inexpensive but super effective? That's a win win in my book!
