A little about me - I danced the retail jive for nine years. When I realized I wanted to work in fashion I wanted to start as fast as I could. I read every book and magazine about fashion from back to front, and then a second time. I dove into signing up for home, etc. in middle school because I knew we would learn how to sew, and as soon as I was old enough - I got a job in retail. Marshall's to be exact. I never looked back until I graduated college.
My final years in retail were my favorite starting with working as a Stylist for BCBG Max Azria my jr. year in college. As you know, BCBG is one of my favorite brands, due to their extremely elegant cuts, colors, and shapes. I was ecstatic when I got a position as stylist with an awesome team of women. I loved the job because I was able to learn about the woman's body; what flatters, what hinders, and what makes them shine. I took that knowledge and translated it into outfits; using details like colors, patterns, silhouettes, and the personality of my client to create looks they would love. Being the best friend who suggests looks to try is one of my favorite things to do. So BCBG felt completely natural. I was working when I wasn't at work, researching trends, reading books on styling for different occasions, and creating mood boards to keep myself inspired. I loved every minute of it.
My last retail gig, and by far the most rewarding experience of my college working years, was Joe's Jeans. If you don't know about them, get acquainted today. My role as PT supervisor allowed me to learn the business inside out, as well as really understand the product. It was that job that showed me denim styling would in some way be a part of my life again at some point. Denim sessions would have me falling in love with my client shopping for denim. We would try a plethora of fits until she found a handful she loved, followed by a second trip around the boutique to pick up some tops and accessories. We would finish up with a pair for her hunni/hubby and say our "see ya's" until her next trip. Providing styling experiences are soothing to my soul. A good stylist will leave their client beaming, excited to get dressed in their new finds. As a woman, I understand the importance of confidence, as well as a compliment, and use that knowledge when styling.
With all that said, I decided I would ease my way back into styling by starting with myself. My dream closet series, is my styling outlet via Polyvore for now until I can get into some freelance opportunities. I would love to retain clientele looking for creative styling services aka the InD Nation creativeprenuers I so dearly adore and support. Like I said, I'm just now coming into my own personal creativeprenuerism so it's only appropriate I get myself together. So please excuse me while I up my ante.
First thing on the list- clear out my closet. If I haven't worn it in the last six months- I won't be wearing it in the next 6. Time to clean it out and sell it to either a spot like Plato's Closet or Miuex Miuex. If you are not feeling those two, there are many more Google can put you on to. Now that I have space to play with, it's time to research. I'll spend the rest of the week checking out a few of my fav blogs, catching up on all the magazines I have lying around, and playing on Polyvore to get a feel of where my style interest lies at this point. Then it will be time for my plan of attack.
I'm about building my grown woman wardrobe slowly with a range of well made pieces. No longer are the days I shop for all at once. Instead, I will come up with about 3-4 pieces I'm looking to invest in and spread out adding them over the next few months. It will be worth it, come the 15th time I wear it. Now that I have my list of wide leg denim, a pair of skinnies, a blouse, and maxi dress, with a dollar amount, I won't over spend ( bring it in cash). I'll pick a day to spend some time in the mall trying on the items I'm interested in and another in Philly checking out the awesome boutiques. Personally, I try similar items on at a few stores before making my decision. On looks I sort of love, I take a selfie and save the date to give myself some time to think on the look. The items I can't leave the store without come home. Bang - New Looks, I'm Happy, my wallets happy. That's how you style and shop for a boss, like a boss.
