The good, the bad, and the down right ugly. Museum mind Beth Consetta Rubel's work evokes a range of emotion; from pride and power to the memory of spirits passed. As the daughter of interracial parents, Rubel spent her childhood growing up in Texas where her family frequently moved to avoid racial discrimination. The intersection of race and pop culture are fundamental components seen in her work. Inspiration flows through thrifting, nostalgic blues & rhythmic jazz music, and more. Utilizing mediums such as chalk pastel, acrylic, gouache, fabric, and found objects she creates pop out pieces that speculate the irony of subtle racism that shape our society.
Her creations are driven by the following question- " Is racism permanently embedded in our culture, or is it a learned behavior that is exploited in media and fed to the masses?" Her creations aim to answer society's contradictions that are philosophical, sexual and emotional. This queen is on a mission, and I'm very interested.
